From a hotel around Piazza di Spagna the cart cannot enter the square itself. Via Condotti, via Frattina and much of via del Babuino are pedestrian or heavily restricted. The driver meets you at the nearest usable corner, typically thirty to eighty metres from your door, and five minutes later you are at Trinità dei Monti looking down the Spanish Steps from above, without having climbed them.
Up by road, never up the steps
One decision shapes this whole route. You go up first, by road, and you never join the crowd at the bottom.
Minutes 0–8. Out of the pedestrian streets and up viale della Trinità dei Monti, the road that reaches the top terrace. You arrive level with the church and the obelisk, looking down the 135 steps over the rooftops. That is the photograph people climb for, and you have walked thirty metres to get it.
Minutes 8–20. The same road runs level to the Pincio terrace, six minutes away on a gentle rise. Piazza del Popolo directly below, St Peter's dome beyond it, benches, shade.
Minutes 20–35. Down into Piazza del Popolo, then out by via di Ripetta, the only vehicle exit from that square. Past the Mausoleum of Augustus and the Ara Pacis, and onto the river.
Minutes 35–60. North along the Lungotevere to Castel Sant'Angelo, with a photo stop on Ponte Sant'Angelo where the angels and the dome line up at the end of the bridge.
Minutes 60–95. Back across into the old centre. The Pantheon approached on foot from Largo di Torre Argentina or the Minerva corner, and Piazza Navona if the time and your appetite allow. Both are pedestrian, so both mean a short walk in from where the cart waits.
Minutes 95–150. Home the long way: Piazza Venezia, up via del Corso, the Trevi Fountain on foot, then via del Tritone and Barberini back towards your hotel. Putting the Trevi at the end rather than the middle is deliberate. The light is usually better by then, and you have somewhere to sit down afterwards.

Best hour to leave. Early evening. You are five minutes from a lit church front and ten from Piazza del Popolo, and you miss the daytime crush at the bottom of the steps entirely. Early morning is the other good answer: before nine the whole quarter is quiet, the shop shutters on via Condotti are still down, and the light comes across the facade of the church from the east.
Between eleven and six this is one of the densest corners of Rome. The route avoids the worst of it, but the pick-up itself is slower.
Which corner, and why it matters
This is the most restricted pick-up area in central Rome, and knowing which corner to use is most of the job.
Depending on your exact address, the meeting point is usually on via del Babuino at a stretch where vehicles are permitted, at the top of via dei Condotti where it meets via del Corso, or on the piazza Mignanelli side. That is thirty to eighty metres from most hotel entrances. The driver walks to the door and meets you by name rather than messaging you to come and find the cart.
You get the exact point and the driver's name by WhatsApp the evening before, not at booking. Street closures in this quarter change week to week, and a point confirmed in March is worth nothing in July.
