Via Veneto.

From a hotel on Via Veneto or in the Ludovisi streets behind it, the cart stops at your entrance and you are at a panoramic terrace in about ten minutes. Porta Pinciana sits at the top of the street. Through it is Villa Borghese, and the Pincio balustrade looks straight down onto Piazza del Popolo. No other central address gets you to a view that fast.

Downhill and inward

You are at the top of a hill on the northern edge of the centre. The tour opens with a park and a terrace, and everything after it runs downhill and inward.

That order matters more than it looks. It puts the crowded places at the end of the loop instead of the start.

Minutes 0–10. Up Via Veneto to Porta Pinciana and through the gate into Villa Borghese. Shaded, quiet, and in July the coolest ten minutes of your day so far.

Minutes 10–20. The Pincio terrace. Everybody gets out. Piazza del Popolo below you, the twin churches, the obelisk, St Peter's dome on the horizon. Four minutes further along the same level road is Trinità dei Monti, where you look down the Spanish Steps without ever climbing them.

Minutes 20–30. Down into Piazza del Popolo, then out along via di Ripetta, the only exit for a vehicle from that square. Past the Mausoleum of Augustus and the Ara Pacis, both slow-and-tell stops: you look, you hear the story, nobody gets out.

Minutes 30–50. Onto the Lungotevere, the road along the river, which is how you cross Rome while the centre is jammed. North to Castel Sant'Angelo and Ponte Sant'Angelo for a three-minute photo stop with the Bernini angels and the dome at the end of the bridge.

Minutes 50–75. Back east to Piazza Venezia, then up via del Corso. The Trevi Fountain is reached on foot from here. The cart waits, you walk in for eight or ten minutes. No vehicle drives to the Trevi Fountain.

Minutes 75–150. Via del Tritone to Piazza Barberini and Bernini's Triton fountain, then whatever the remaining time allows: the Pantheon on foot, the Jewish Quarter and the Theatre of Marcellus, or back up through the park for a second pass at the terrace if the light has turned. The last third of the route is yours to redirect.

How long things take from Via Veneto

Best hour to leave. Sunset, without much argument. You reach the Pincio in ten minutes, which is the terrace people cross the city for, and you come back down through a lit Corso afterwards. In June that means starting around half past seven; in November, closer to four. Morning works well too: at eight the park is empty and the Trevi Fountain is still visible.

The slot to avoid from this address in summer is midday, when Via Veneto's own gradient and glare are at their least forgiving.

Where we meet you

Via Veneto is a wide public road with no pedestrian restriction, so in almost every case the cart stops directly in front of your hotel entrance. The upper section sits outside the historic-centre restricted zone, and that is one reason arrivals here are simpler than at an address near the Pantheon.

In the narrower Ludovisi side streets, via Ludovisi, via Sardegna and via Lombardia, the driver may wait at the nearest corner and walk to the door to meet you by name.

Either way you get a message the evening before with the exact point and the driver's name. Nobody is sent out to look for a vehicle.
